Haapavesi provides a wide scope of services for leisure and recreation for the citizens and visitors. In our town there are beautiful nature objects for sports and open air events. Abundance of lakes, picturesque landscape, coastal trails on the territory of the town provide opportunities for walking and fishing. Thanks to the unparallel landscapes Haapavesi is called the pearl of Northern Ostrobothnia. Also, active volunteering of numerous non-government organizations of the town provides opportunities for different hobbies. Sports and entertainment complex Aakonmaja – organization of car rallies, competitions, fairs and other events. The complex is equipped with the necessary technology for meetings and seminars; there is a canteen, sauna, and a beautiful landscaped territory for large events. There is a shooting ground and lighted skiing trails here.

The "Haapaveden urheilijat” sporting association organizes year-round sports activities – ice hockey, football, baseball, trail orienteering, skiing clubs, as well as sports camps for children and adolescents, competitions and events for all ages.

Cultural services

The city is famous for its diverse and colorful culture.

Thanks to the professional teachers and high class musicians working in our town, preserving musical traditions plays a key role. Kantele is the business card of Haapavesi and our «strong» musical teachers are known for their class beyond the Northern Ostrobothnia region.

The largest cultural and well-known in Finland event of our town is the annual international folk music festival Haapavesi Folk, which takes place at the end of June. The second most popular cultural event is «the Night of Arts» - a traditional town event at the end of summer which attracts people with a diverse and eventful program.

Additionally to music, theater and dancing are very active in the town. The theater studio and dance school offer residents and guests of the city to enjoy a variety of theatrical and dance productions. A lot of attention is paid to art and culture "from young to old" in our city.

One can't help noting active work of associations and non-government organizations in our town, which promote well-being of citizens and charge leisure activities with their energy and enthusiasm organizing a lot of different events during the year. You can get more detailed information about non-government organizations from their representatives as well as from the weekly «Haapavesi» newspaper's section ”Yhdistykset" with contact information of associations, clubs and trade unions. Every spring there is a cultural week for children and youth full of music, dancing and educational events.

Cultural center Kirnu is situated in the restored old milk factory on the shore of a lake close to the center. Kirnu is mostly space for dance and theater performances, but it is possible to organize concerts, lectures and private parties, corporate parties, jubilees and holidays. The cultural center has 82 seats in the auditorium, a stage, cozy cafe in a heated glass terrace, a foyer and artists' dressing rooms.

Library is situated in the town center, equipped with all modern equipment, and offers literature, newspapers and magazines, audiovisual materials and information services. Employees of the library can help you find and use information. Every month the library organizes different art exhibitions; there is a literary circle as well as cultural lectures for all ages at the library «to quench the thirst for knowledge». The library is open on weekdays from 10.00 to 19.00.

Youth House offers teenagers services in organizing their free time. There are discos, amateur circles, exhibitions, fairs, parties and many other events! The premises are equipped with modern equipment; there are computer games, game consoles, billiards, board games and a fully-equipped kitchen for cooking.

Rejo-Vaara Hall is situated in the main building of the Haapavesi college. A spacious auditorium is ideal for different events. The 204-seat auditorium has a complete audiovisual system for AV-presentations and video conferences and a stage with a full audio system. Besides, there is a cafe in the same building, conference halls and meeting rooms good for group work. The hall is also used as a cinema and twice a month there are movie screenings for all ages.

Ainali Youth Club

There are leisure meetings in the club for young people, amateur circles organized by non-government associations as well as dances with live music, karaoke and other kinds of parties.
